India p.v. Sindhu, 10 seed, beat Japan's Kaori Imabeppu 21-19, 19-21, 21-17 in the second round of the Badminton World Championships.
Young Indian took the first game 21-19, but fought in the second take Imabeppu at 19-21. The third was too close to the game. The two were tied at 10-10 before Sindhu took four points in a row to get the vital edge, which she never relinquished.
Sindhu was a hard match, but eventually came through.
Sindhu had a total of 42 smash winners in the match, compared to Imabeppu, who had 29 smash winners. Sindhu also won more points in the network — 17-11, but it was clearer Imabeppu winners — 11-2.
But Sindhu, who received a bye in the first round, got its act together in the third game and pulled away to get a big win. She will face the winner of the match between second seed Wang Yihan and Belaetrix Manuputi.
Men's doubles competition Tarun Kona and Vishnu Arun India lost to Indonesian Alvent Yulianto Chandra seeds 15 and Kido Markis 21-15, 13-21, 21-17.
The duo fought back well in the second game but the Indonesian pair was too strong.
